How would you like to live with the terrifying Sith Lord Darth Malgus? We’re about to find out at Rancho Obi-Wan as the more than 7-foot tall, 3-foot wide dark-side warrior has staked out a space in front of the museum’s art gallery. And he’s not leaving!
Malgus is the rage-filled anti-hero of Star Wars: The Old Republic, the massive multiplayer online game and related Expanded Universe material. He is also the newest example of the amazing sculpting and manufacturing prowess of Sideshow Collectibles. The company’s sixth-scale Malgus is pretty amazing itself, but nothing can compare with the huge 1:1 scale statue that makes Malgus seem to come to life—especially when a switch is pressed and his chest, collar, wrist gauntlets and lengthy lightsaber start to glow with red (and a few white) lights.
Despite his heft, Malgus is fairly easy to assemble, even though Rancho general manager Anne Neumann and I took our time to examine and understand the relationship of all the pieces before assembly. The statue comes in seven cartons shrink-wrapped to a small plastic pallet. You start at box #1 and continue in order (except be aware that the oversized wrench you need to tighten two bolts from box 4 is packed in box 5).
Because of the statue’s height (which makes me look really short) we needed to figure out the perfect spot for it. We realized that our first choice wouldn’t look right after we aligned the feet on the base; a quick move a few feet to the left made it perfect. Everything fit together really well, and it just took a slight turn of the torso to get all the electrical contacts to align. The final touch is a black fabric hooded cape, which is elaborately packed in a long box to avoid creasing.
I won’t kid you; buying Darth Malgus is a hefty investment. But the statue will be a very limited edition and if you’re a big fan of the dark side, a spectacularly frightening addition to any collection. For more information on the Darth Malgus, go to Sideshow Collectibles, a Rancho Obi-Wan sponsor.
